Trump files lawsuit seeking special master over search at Mar-a-lago

Trump filed this lawsuit seeking a special master to oversee the search of Mar-a-lago.  But he didn't file a motion in the Reinhart case, which is strange.  The lawsuit was filed in West Palm Beach, but was randomly assigned to Judge Aileen Cannon,* the best draw that Trump could have hoped for.  It will be interesting to see whether it is reassigned or referred to Magistrate Judge Reinhart. (The Trump lawyers did not check the box on the civil cover sheet indicating that there was a related case.)

The case didn't get off to the best of starts for the Trump lawyers as their motions for pro hac were denied for not following the local rules.

* I deleted an earlier post suggesting that the former President was forum shopping by filing in Ft. Pierce.  I was wrong as the case was filed (correctly) in West Palm Beach and just randomly assigned to Judge Cannon.  My apologies.

Pretty sure the civil case cover sheet indicates it was filed in palm beach county. And even if it wasn’t, the assignments are randomized pursuant to SDFLA’s internal procedures (page 5). https://t.co/KdmF68gj8y

I made a mistake once when blogging. Think it was in 2011.

Amazing that the Trump legal team came up with the "Special Master" strategy two days after Jon Sale said that's what he would have done if he were representing Trump. Not a good sign for Trump when his lawyers are getting their ideas from watching other lawyers on TV.

Probably for the same reason, acute left wing bias

Interesting/sad.

When Reinhart, who evidently has some Democratic connection or anti-Trump social media posts drew the case -- at random -- folks on the right screamed the fix was in and those on the left called them all foolish conspiracists.

A week or so later, Cannon, appointed by Trump, draws the lawsuit -- at random -- and folks on the left scream the fix is in and those on the right call them all foolish conspiracists.

I'm reminded of the supposed presidential influence on, or disconnection from, gasoline prices, whereby Democrats and Republicans heedlessly whipsaw from one position to the other based on which party they perveance will benefit in the moment.

Just to let you know: If you view every event exclusively through a simple partisan lens, if you have no actual and universally applied philosophical, moral or political standards that shape your world view, you are what's wrong with this country. That's a great way to root on a sports team. It's a lousy way to run a republic.

2:34 -- DOM didn't say that fix is in. He simply said that it was a good draw for Trump. Do you disagree? Judges are people too and we all know who is good and bad for certain parties. Do you think Judge Moore is good for criminal defendants? Well, what judge is?

Certainly not Martinez.

Totally agree that David did not say or imply the fix is in just that it was a good draw.

2:49, I wasn't talking about DOM.

But go spend 5 minutes on twitter. Search Trump/Reinhart then Trump/Cannon and see endless examples of what I'm describing.

3:53 there are a million examples of tribalism and whataboutism. Reinhart and Cannon applied for those jobs. Perhaps Leo's $1.6B gift to the GOP can be used to defend Cannon.

Why is Cannon the best draw Trump can hope for? She came right out of the US Attorney's office?

I need some help. I know there are some good defense attorneys here. DEA conducted a search warrant at my house and removed several kilos and bank records. I want someone to ask the judge to appoint a special master in the case. Any attorney want to take this up and be laughed out of court?
Anyone?

Call the PDs.

Those are some cracker-jack lawyers Trump has. Amazing to see that a former President is having trouble assembling a legal team. The lawyer who filed the motion for the special master is a first part insurance lawyer. Wow!!! As for the merits of the search, I am guessing that the Feds had airtight PC, but how about everyone take a deep breath, relax, let this play out. Airwaves and twitter are filled with so called experts running their big mouths about a case in which they are not involved. Btw, I am not assuming they will charge Trump even if they can. Lets see.

Special master could be appropriate. But mag would evidence that.

No post on the latest Will Bill vs. Rockin' Robin battle?

Judge Reinhart who appears to be a fine judge should have recused himself because of the political contributions. There probably are any number of mags who have been on long enough that they do not have a past record of political contributions.
If Judge Reinhart had made political contributions to Trump, then his most recent order would have had a torrent of criticism as well.
The deep divisions in this country which have even families bitterly divided does not bode well for our country.

Dude, the MAGA crowd would have accused 15 year old BR of writing a bad review of Trump’s performance in Home Alone 2 if they didn’t like the outcome. Same for the Far Far Left. Only then it would have been some Democrat he prosecuted as an AUSA.

He deserves credit for doing his job.

There is not a single person that would be acceptable to Trump and his people if they rule in a way he doesn’t like.

She's a carpetbagging Federalist with sites set on higher court...she'll never rule against him. She has no real experience except roofing illegals!
