Prosecutors and defense lawyers may disagree on a lot of
things, but most agree on the mission of rehabilitating convicted
defendants. Riverside House, a local
halfway house for federal defendants here in Miami, is dedicated to that mission. On Friday, April 8, 2022, Riverside House
will host its Second Annual Luncheon recognizing those in our community who
have supported this mission. The award
recipients this year include former federal district Judge Ursula Ungaro, Assistant U.S.
Attorney Randy Hummel, and our blog’s own David Markus. To hear about what these folks have done for ex-offenders
and criminal defendants, please join us.
You can purchase tickets through the link below.
The SDFLA Blog is dedicated to providing news and notes regarding federal practice in the Southern District of Florida. The New Times calls the blog "the definitive source on South Florida's federal court system." All tips on court happenings are welcome and will remain anonymous. Congratulations to DOM and Randy! Well deserved.
And because words matter we should refer to those we want to rehabilitate as returning citizens and not convicted defendants.
"most agree on the mission of rehabilitating convicted defendants"
You think prosecutors agree on that mission? Hahahahahaha!
The mission of most prosecutors, state or federal, is to hit defendants with the most time in prison as possible before they ever get a shot at "rehabilitation." If they can't put defendants in prison for life on the first shot, then load them up with onerous probation and parole conditions to keep them coming back to prison until they stay there forever.
