2025 Bench & Bar Conference

By Jordi C. Martínez-Cid

The Bench & Bar Conference returned to the Miami Beach Convention Center last Friday, and drew a packed house of lawyers and judges. It offered a full day of programming and networking opportunities, including panels analyzing recent Supreme Court decisions, free speech on college campuses, and all manner of topics relevant to the practice of law, ranging from discussion of local rules to the obligatory panel on artificial intelligence. Fancy coffee, as displayed by the Chief Judge, was consumed.

Best-selling local novelist Brad Meltzer gave the keynote speech during lunch, delivering a version of his viral Make Magic commencement address.

The event was hosted by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida and the South Florida Chapter of the Federal Bar Association with special recognition due to Judge Altman, Lindsey Lazopoulos Friedman, and Stephanie Casey for organizing.

Kudos to Judge Altman and the dynamic duo of Stephanie and Lindsey. I doubt any district in this country puts on a more professionally run (and interesting) conference.

Judge Altman secured an all-star line-up for this conference. Congrats to him and the committee for another great event. Now, let's take it to Fort Lauderdale next time.

Not only was the coffee good (and fresh all day), the food was ample and varied. The lunch was good: hot, tasty, and generous. Best value at $210 of any CLE seminar I have attended in a long time. I was especially interested in the panel directed at new lawyers: Sr J Graham, Bkr J Lopez Castro, Mag J Louis, and Mag J Reinhart all sent important messages re: how to stand out in first and later jobs, necessary ethical and civility stuff (well presented), and gave good personal experience examples. As a 50-year practitioner, I was very appreciative of their enthusiasm for the practice, and was delighted to see what a great example they all set.
I also ditto the other affirmative comments.
