Groundbreaking for Fort Lauderdale Courthouse

By John R. Byrne

Yes, we're finally getting a new federal courthouse in Fort Lauderdale. The groundbreaking ceremony was this past Wednesday. So, if you ever wanted to see a bunch of federal judges wearing hardhats and wielding shovels, this was your chance.

There's a push to name the courthouse for Judge Dimitrouleas, known affectionally as "Judge D." He's well-deserving of such an honor. Some great pictures of the event below.

How about the “Zloch-Dimitrouleas” Judicial complex? This way we can call it the ZD.

"fast Billy D" certainly does NOT deserve the courthouse to be named for him. As a state judge he set cases 30 days after arraignment. As a federal judge he is not lawyer friendly and goes out of his way to ignore lawyers when he sees them on the street. He has a very high opinion of himself and is extremely arrogant. I would rather name it after Jose Gonzalez, a great judge and human.

Why David even allowed this comment up is beyond me.

You are so wrong about Judge D. He is fair, efficient and a wonderful guy. If you need time, you get it. You just can’t be a state hack saying you need a continuance for no good reason.

If they ever finish this new courthouse, when will they get around to demolishing the old federal courthouse?

Do they have any ideas for whatever building will replace that leaking mold infested monstrosity?

Name is after Judge Gonzalez so we can call
it The JAG.

"the trialmaster" obviously does not know Judge D and has not appeared before him regularly. Judge D is respectful, hard-working, and takes getting the right result incredibly seriously. Although Judge D. may be a bit reserved, anyone who has appeared before him regularly, tried cases before him, or clerked for him (as I did), would know that literally every statement made in your post is false - except for the fact that Judge Gonzales is, like Judge D., a great judge and human.

“the trialmaster” lol. A more appropriate nickname would be “the meet ‘em and plead ‘em”

Completely agree with your comments. So many of the commenters, especially those that make up their own nicknames are legends in their own minds.
