Tony Gonzalez named First Assistant at U.S. Attorney's Office

Ariana Fajardo Orshan shook up the office last week, making lots of changes, including naming Tony Gonzalez as her First Assistant.

Ben Greenberg, who had that role under Willie Ferrer, and then again under Orshan (while serving as Acting U.S. Attorney in between), is moving to Ft. Lauderdale as senior litigation counsel.

Kraft has hired a dream team of lawyers including Epstein's lawyer. He is opting for a bench trial. Hmmm.

Good for Tony. Prosecutor to the core, but decent.

I wonder if the new U.S. Attorney knows that Judge Gold found that Gonzalez committed prosecutorial misconduct in the Shaygan affair:

"I find that AUSA Gonzalez acted inappropriately by permitting Cronin to make the decision whether the matter should proceed at all and by instructing Cronin to confirm the allegations with Wells. Gonzalez was obligated to instruct Cronin, as the lead trial attorney, to cease and desist from participating in this collateral matter. Both Cronin and Gonzalez were obligated to follow their own office policy which provided guidance for prosecutors regarding potential investigation of attorneys in order to avoid “a public perception of...animus toward the attorney.” [Court Ex. 5at 3]. Gonzalez, at that point, should have assumed personal responsibility for investigating, or causing the investigation, of such a serious matter before further contact was made with Gilbert. While I find that Gonzalez failed in his supervising role, I do not credit Cronin’s testimony at the Sanctions Hearing that he raised doubts to Gonzalez about the accuracy of Tucker’s statements. Nothing in his conduct confirms his testimony. Instead, it was Cronin who labeled Tucker’s remarks as “witness tampering” and initiated further contact with his AUSA Karen Gilbert. At no time did he advise Gilbert about his “doubts.” I find that there did not exist at this juncture sufficient facts for the United States to proceed in good faith on a collateral prosecution for witness tampering."

Going to Ft. Laud as senior counsel after being acting US Atty is like being Secretary of State and then being named Ambassador to Spain. A cushy demotion.

Wasn't the US attorney ultimately vindicated in Shaygin?

What are the other changes?

Gotta set aside anyone that might be affected by the Epstein OPR review.

Or anyone involved in the other sweepstake fraud too?

Bring back Ben Daniel, esq.

Wait, you can't make a donation to help make your child more attractive to the university?

Anonymous said...

You can, in the millions. Directly to the University.

Donating 75 grand to a SAT / ACT coordinator is still illegal.

Or to a basketball coach!

So if I am really rich, it is okay to pay the university directly, but if I am just a little rich, not....and, if I am poor and a good athlete, and the university tries to pay me to choose it over another, I or my family goes to jail and I don't get to go to college? And...if I am smart, a good student and rich, the university can pay me to attend on an academic scholarship even though I don't need the money! Fuck.

Yeah this case really show the discrimination against folks who are not super rich.
