11th Circuit Conference

Well we had the 11th Circuit Conference this week in Aventura.  The conference is every two years and rotates among the states in the 11th Circuit.  This was our year.  Chief Judge Pryor, Chief Judge Altonaga, and the rest of the planning committee put on a lovely and well-attended conference.  Almost all of the district and circuit judges attended.  And the final talk was with Justice Thomas, our Circuit Justice.

If someone offered me $10,000 to listen to Thomas I would find a better use for my time. He is a moron and a fool.

This may be one of the dumbest comments I’ve ever seen. And it well illustrates a modern day problem with lawyers and just people in general. Assume you don’t agree with his background, his opinion, or anything he says. He’s still worth listening to and he’s an excellent speaker. On the converse, assume Justice Sotomayor came down for a talk and you similarly disagreed with everything about her. It would still be well worth it to go and listen to her talk. The moron and the fool in your comment is not you, but the person offering you the $10,000. Hopefully there is room and hope for you to improve.

He is also as corrupt as they come. I would boycott any event that featured him as a speaker. What a disgrace he is.

Why do you allow comments like 12:17 to be posted?

I went, and Thomas -- as well as the rest of the event -- was great. I also appreciate that David seemingly permits all comments to be posted. Rumpole censors his posts, and, while his posts, especially about the local judiciary, tend to generate more comments than David's, censorship (both because views get suppressed and because of the time-lag to posting) tends to make his site much less enjoyable.

Why wouldn't a moderator allow comments like 1217 to be posted? Is there some rule against truthfully calling a Supreme Court justice corrupt? If the Harlan Crow caws, its probably another luxury motorhome or child's tuition payment. Just go ahead and wipe your feet on the Voting Rights Act before you come in.

100%. Thomas is openly corrupt (or at the very least, completely uninterested in addressing the appearance of corruption his conduct gives rise to), and the reflexive genuflecting among our profession is, frankly, nauseating.

He's also part of an ideological Court that just gutted the Voting Rights Act and ensured the voices of Black voters in the South will get gerrymandered into oblivion. But sure, 9:05 says he was "great" -- so I guess all is fine.

My guess is you don’t care about Blacks—especially since Justice Thomas is Black—but you’re interested in a particular political party. So under the guise of caring about race, you are making a racist argument. I doubt seriously you will vote for the Republican candidate for Governor of Florida in 2026. And he’s Black.

@9:41, What was my racist argument? Please fill me in, because I can't seem to find it. I will offer, in the meantime, that your position -- which appears to be that Thomas should be immune to criticism because he is Black (or, stated differently, that criticizing him is inherently a racist argument because he is Black) -- is itself racist. And it's certainly not a position Thomas himself would take, in any case. He's open to criticism to the same extent anyone else is, and the reason I singled him out as opposed to, say, Alito, is that Thomas was the one at the conference.

As for my party affiliation? Sure, I usually vote D. And I never vote MAGA. And for those reasons, I won't be voting for the R candidate for Governor of Florida. Not that my vote is relevant to anything.

Your ad hominems aside, my point stands: SCOTUS just gutted a landmark piece of civil rights legislation, and the results are already playing out before our eyes: White-dominated state legislatures engaging in racial gerrymanders.

No why would I vote for or against someone because they are Black? I won’t vote for Byron Donalds because he’s a dumb Trump lackey. He’ll definitely lose some votes from the racist Republican base because of his race though.

They have taken his "Black Card"... he should never have been confirmed.
