Jared Strauss is a nice enough guy who has about a tenth of the experience that Steve Petri does.
Including Judge Strauss, the last SEVEN individuals selected as United States Magistrate Judges in the Southern District of Florida have ONE thing in common: being an Assistant United States Attorney. That is one heck of a run. Rumpole doesn't need anyone to speak for him, but I believe his point was that the district court judges have made it clear that if you are not a prosecutor or a former prosecutor - don't even bother applying. And on that point, he was right.
These comments are ridiculous. Those who have never been prosecutors do not quite understand the fact that a huge portion of a Magistrate's time is reviewing search warrants, trap and trace warrants, pen registers, etc from the USAO. This does not mean that the relationship between Magistrate and USAO is always harmonious. It is not, and there is a lot of back and forth and hours for AUSA's sitting in Magistrate's offices as they review each warrant line by line with an agent present. These are documents that quite frankly, unless you have done them before, and frankly been a supervisor handling these matters like Mr Strauss, that would be difficult to just learn on the job. Mr. Strauss was the USAO's guru for all electronic search warrants for many years and worked closely with the Magistrate's to create forms and processes for items being sought by law enforcement in the 21st Century, i.e. emails, cell phone data, etc. He is very circumspect about all of this and holds himself and others to an extremely high standard before agreeing to an agent's demands for such data. He is exactly what we need in a Magistrate for the 21st Century and will continue to be a leader in this area, as well as a strong protector of Defendant's rights, as he was at the USAO. Everybody who really knows Mr. Strauss, already knows this.

He will be great.
Shouldn’t be a surprise that a court of prosecutors wants prosecutors as magistrate judges:
Yet another prosecutor picked as a Mag
well, it pains me to say it:
Rumpole was right
other than lurana snow, dave brannon, bruce reinhart, william matthewman, pat hunt, yeah dumpole has a point
11:25 HUH?

Judge Louis was on the CJA panel for years. She is also a former prosecutor, but so are a ton of defense attorneys.
Judge Otazo Reyes was not a former prosecutor last time I checked
ditto brannon WPB, Hunt in FTL and Matthewman
facts can be so annoying
Snow was an superpivor at US attorney's office when she became a mag.

Hopefully Magistrate Strauss will bring the same honor to the bench as Johnny K.

9:33 it shouldn't be a surprise. the pd office here gets no respect and for good reason.
What a joke this court is. Embarrassing.
