Where's the poll on the new nominee to the Court. My prediction? Judge Karen Williams of South Carolina.
Those on the inside think it will be Sixth Circuit Judge Danny Boggs ... a Roberts clone, except he is older ... and was born in Havana.
While Judge Boggs is extremely bright, and extremely conservative, I seriously doubt he'd be the pick. The Sixth Circuit had been the site of some very unpleasant public back-and-forth sniping by the Judges, and Boggs's occasionally-hostile writing style has made many enemies. While everyone seems to respect his intellect, he does not share the across-the-board good will that Roberts had. His confirmation would be a serious war, and he's not young enough or doctrinnaire (sp?) enough to justify that fight from GWB's perspective. From a S.D. Fla. standpoint, I know we have at least one former Boggs law clerk who practices in our neck of the woods, and I hope he reads this blog because I'd be interested to hear his insights.
