Happy Friday. Wild Miami story I had somehow never heard about. The murder trial of Candace "Candy" Mossler and her nephew, Melvin Lane Powers. They were accused of having an incestuous affair that ultimately led to Powers killing Candy's husband. The prosecution team was led by none other than Dade County State Attorney Richard Gerstein. I won't spoil the ending. Check out the article here.
In local news, longtime AUSA Randy Hummel has retired. He had an incredible career, holding several prominent positions in the office. And, more importantly, he's a great person who gave back to our community, including through his critical efforts in support of the Court's CARE court program. He'll be greatly missed.
Great read. Reminds me of the Joyce Cohen case a few decades later or the Lana Turner take down of Johny Stompanato a few years earlier. All of the hoopla is based on a truth F. Scott Fitzgerald said a long time ago: “Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand."
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting and captivating story. Has an air of the movie "Chinatown". Surprised they did not make a movie. So it goes. Thanks for posting DOM.
ReplyDeleteFascinating about what it says about our obsession with celebrities. Brings back memories. The most similar case I can think of is Jean Harris, who murdered her paramour Herman Tarnower, the Scarsdale Diet doctor and author, in 1981. Trial took 14 weeks and the jury was out 8-9 days. GUILTY!!!!!. 15 years to life. Coumo the elder commuted her sentence after ten years. And as I nurse my third Scotch here at the bar, the name Claus Von Bulow jogs my memory, a European socialite and denizen of Newport Rhode Isalnd who was convicted of poisoning his wealthy wife. His conviction was overturned and he was subsequently acquitted. Happened in the early 80's. So Candy and Mel are part of a long tradition of turning to the dark arts to enrich themselves.
ReplyDeleteMelvin Lane Powers was her alleged lover. I recall it quite well. I believe the defense attorney was a hot shot from Texas..... Not sure.
ReplyDeleteWhere Jerry and Max Kogan assisting Gerstein?
