The defense is arguing that the prosecutors are striking all the African-American jurors. The prosecution is arguing that the defense is striking all the Hispanic males. Both sides are giving race-neutral reasons for their strikes. Judge Lenard has halted jury selection and has asked for briefs by Tuesday.
son of a bitch. THEY SUCK. That is not hot.
ReplyDeleteIsn't this where you argue that peremptory challenges should be abolished?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if anyone else is aware of the fact that a good (and by good I mean BAD) portion of white Hispanics in Miami are pretty freaking racists! I'm not assuming this, it's a FACT.
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't believe it would be wise to do without peremptory challenges, not in Miami at least.
ReplyDeleteActually, we shouldn't do without PCs while selecting a jury anywhere in the South =) You know, just to be on the safe side.
If you try mostly federal cases, you would know this =)
And I agree with 11:09 am - indeed, that is not HOT, it's actually pretty darn COLD!
ReplyDeleteI wonder? Is it racist to make broad, sweeping, negative statements about a whole people based on pure speculation, anecdotal information, and limited observation? If so, is Val a racist?
ReplyDeleteHow dare you accuse me of making overly broad negative statements? Have you been to South Miami? I think NOT! Try going to Versailles on 8 Street, and then we'll see how you feel about "racist" Val =)
ReplyDeleteAnd don't forget to mention your support for President Obama while you're waiting for your Cuban coffee =)
ReplyDeleteIt should be a VERY PLEASANT experience. Honestly, I live in Miami, I know what I'm talking about ... It's unfortunate, but quite accurate.
10:51 a.m. here, I am a Cuban American, born and raised in "la sagusera." I have spent my share of time on Calle Ocho, and do not need a lesson on ordering cafe from anyone.
ReplyDeleteThat our community has a few misguided individuals does not make us unique. What I took note of in your comments is the way that you attempt to pass of your born in 1985 (I assume you were born in 1985 based on a comment I saw on another thread) view of the world and limited experience as "fact."
I disagree with your perspective. Hispanics are by nature show boats and enjoy making outrageous statements (even if they don’t mean them), hence the Versailles phenomenon. However, when push comes to shove, I think that the vast majority of Hispanics in this town are not racist and are committed to justice.
You may disagree, but that does not mean that your opinion is anywhere near being "fact."
11:49 AM, you, sir, are stalking my comments!
ReplyDeleteSo, according to you, my view of the world is based on my "limited" experience ... Therefore, because I'm young I don't support this awful backwards way of thinking?
In all seriousness, that was my modest attempt at manipulating your poorly written 3 page essay on what it's like to be Cuban American (in Miami) and the Versailles phenomenon.
How do you know I am not Cuban American? You don't =)
On that note, my comments are only meant to stir up the blog ... Thus, if you knew any better, you would have picked up on that without wasting your time being OVERLY offended =)
Viva Cuba (minus Castro, both of them =)! And viva Versailles and their Cuban coffee!
See, this is how we get off topic!!!
