He was appointed back in 1971 as the first Magistrate Judge in the Southern District of Florida.
One of the nicest men I've ever met.
A true gentleman.
And a great story teller.
Old school.
He will be sorely missed.

RIP Judge Peter Palermo
He was 97!

ReplyDeleteWow, 97-years-old. He lived a full life. Who is the old guy next to him in the 4th picture?
ReplyDeleteOne of the great members of the federal bench. One of his off-the-bench activities was to swear in naturalized Americans, and you couldn't ask for a better example for new citizens.
ReplyDeleteHis stories were memorable. About working on a beer truck in Pittsburgh. About serving in North Africa during WWII. He settled many a case I had in front of him with his charm and crankiness. RIP

ReplyDeleteI still have the pocket US Constitution he gave me at a mediation. They don't make them like him anymore.
ReplyDeleteA truly remarkable man. I'll miss his wit and wisdom. He was down to earth, genuine, kind, and fair. His bond hearings were real bond hearings and he even made CJA voucher audits (arguably the worst assignment any Magistrate Judge could have) immeasurably fun.
