BREAKING — RUDY RUIZ TO BE NOMINATED FOR DISTRICT JUDGESHIP; UPDATED: RODNEY SMITH AND ROY ALTMAN ALSO TO BE NOMINATED
Multiple sources have confirmed that Rudy Ruiz has been informed that he will be nominated by President Trump for one of the 5 open district court seats for the Southern District of Florida. Congrats to Judge Ruiz, who currently sits as a state trial judge in Miami-Dade County. Ruiz went to Georgetown Law and then clerked for Judge Moreno. Like Moreno, Ruiz started as a County Court judge, then became a Circuit Court Judge and now moves over to the federal bench.
UPDATE — I have heard that Trump has also informed two others that they will be nominated and that he will “hold over” the last two spots. I do not know whether that means that 2 people from the current list will get those slots or whether they will be opened back up.
SECOND UPDATE — I have heard that the other two names are Roy Altman and Rodney Smith. This is not confirmed yet. If you have any information on this, please email me. dmarkus at markuslaw dot coM
THIRD UPDATE — Two sources have confirmed these other two names. I feel pretty good that these are the three names.

Great choices
Great choices?
Yes
These are all great choices. However, it is disappointing that of the 10 nominees in contention, only 1 was a woman - who is also qualified - and was not selected. There are two other spots to fill.
We are soon to have the best looking district judge in the country!
I guess we'll see.
I thought that none of the others on the list will be selected for the two other spots. Reopen the JNC?
The real disppontment was, again, no Asians.
#judges-so-occidental
One less side-move from USAO to the bench. One less judge owing favors to his old office.
True, and Altman and Smith ain't bad looking either.
this is all funny but none really have experience to be fed judge.
3 Miami applicants to fill these Lauderdale spots. Let me guess what'll happen. They will all say they'll go wherever they are needed. and then bitch and moan about having to go to north. and then eventually just start hearing all their cases in miami.
6:34, how so?
Good picks. I don't get 6:34 am's comment that they don't have the requisite experience, but everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. Glad to see former judicial law clerks being picked for these positions.
If you think 2 under 40s with limited legal experience are suited to the federal bench and a lifetime appointment yes you are entitled to your opinion.
I'm not a fan of those with no judicial experience being appointed to the federal bench. I don't mind an appointee with limited experience, but to have none? tsk tsk. Smith is an excellent choice. I'm surprised Arzola isn't on the short list as well.
I agree and am surprised Arzola's connect couldn't swing a two-fer. Losing his touch.
