How to treat defendants as people

From last week's DBR (via South Florida Lawyers):

Sara San Martin, 39, also known as Sara Echeverria, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of bank fraud for allegedly writing checks from the personal accounts of the late Miami maritime attorney William Huggett.

In court Tuesday, San Martin tearfully answered questions posed to her by U.S. District Judge Judge Adalberto Jordan, who at one point sent a box of tissues over to her.

It always amazes me what people do for money. I bet she's regretting paying off that home mortgage and Dodge Ram with fraudulent checks. It also reminds all lawyers how careful we need to be when hiring individuals who will have access to firm and trust accounts.

Some of Huggett's staff always seemed to be living above their pay grade. Mystery solved.

One day the real story shall be told. Money, money, money! Funny how it's always about money.

Sara San Martin was nothing more than Hialeah gutter trash. Have fun in prison, scally wag!

I am so glad Wingate is closing up shop. He doesn't stand a chance in this town.

It's not the City of Hialeah's fault for anyone's wrong doing. Aside, from that....gutters are everywhere, and they all collect trash. We only know how many scandals have come out of the City of Miami, and neighboring cities. There are many honest, civil people who live in Hialeah. As a matter of fact Sara lives and plays in Miami.

Attention should be placed where it merits. She took what didn't belong to her, and got caught, along with the other folks from that office. Unfortunately, it took someone to die for the truth to be unveiled.

It's my understanding that on 2/1/08 she was sentenced in Federal Court with 1 year and 1 day!
